Introducing a super adorable, vintage 1960’s, black & white gingham striped, sailor dress. It was obviously professionally made (very high quality construction), but it has no tags, so it may have been a custom piece. I’ve certainly never seen another like it, although it definitely harks from the 1960’s, when cute lil sailor dresses such as this were all the rage. This particular example is constructed from generous amounts of gauzy, semi-sheer cotton blend, with alternating horizontal panels of black & white cotton gingham and loads of ric rac trim. It closes in front with a long row of round, white plastic buttons, and features a classic, nautical theme, sailor’s collar and decorative twin ties that can either hang loose or be loosely knotted at the base of the v-neck. The skirt is very full with many gathers and a cotton lining beneath to add volume. The bodice is also lined. So cool and classic!
This dress is in excellent vintage condition. The only minor flaw found is a very VERY light yellowish mark on the cape of the collar. It is so hard to see, I was hard pressed to find it in a photo and it may come out entirely with a bit of care. I did not attempt a stain removal myself, since it is so hard to see and it doesn’t really affect the wearability of this dress…again, because it is so faint.
Please ZOOM on the last photo in the queue. It is a good representation of how incredibly LIGHT this mark is. I almost could have gotten away with not mentioning it, at all..but that’s not how we roll at Hautie Haus <3
PLEASE NOTE-> Additional close up photos are available upon request, feel free to message me. Otherwise MINT. The black check and ric rac are still very dark and vibrant… and the white is crisp and bright.
(Sorry, sailor’s hat is not included.)
Sizewise, I would say that it is a modern SMALL-a smaller Medium. But please see the measurements below. They were all taken with the garment laying flat, seam to seam, and have already been doubled where necessary. Please compare them to a similar garment of your own. There is not much stretch to the material.
For reference, the lovely Athena is 5’5″ tall and a modern small.
PLEASE NOTE-> I also tried this dress on and it fit me in the bust-waist-hip region, but was definitely much too short, length-wise, on my 5’9″ frame. (The length was perfection on Athena, as you can see from the photos.) My measurements are 35″-26″-35″. Those represent the upper limits for this dress.
Shoulders->approx 15″ (38 cm)
Bust-> 33″-35″ (84 cm-89 cm) (It fit my 35″ bust nicely…snug, but not overly tight.)
Waist->26″ (66 cm)
Hips->42″ (107 cm)
Entire length->57″ (145 cm)
OMG! I should n o t have tried this dress on, heh heh. It is seriously so cute! Unfortunately, there is no hem allowance to take down and it is ridiculously short on me *sigh*, so I offer it up to the world at large. Potentially a OOAK vintage find, so if you love it as much as I do, don’t let it get away!
